This first volume provides a vivid, intimate and brutally honest terms applicable to the whole three volumes of this outstanding work account of the authors childhood in a post-war Geordie mining community. The account of the poverty, schooling and the impact of Catholicism in a heavily migrant Irish community is both harrowing and shocking with the childhood sex and violence that most people leave out bravely left in.
The level of class conflict and personal conflict between youngsters is conveyed with a believable level of realism. Dave Douglas was evidently a rebel from the beginning, maybe a rebel without a conscious cause in his school days and active rejection of the school system and all it stood for but this book traces his almost miraculous survival from the institutions that did little more than steer youth towards a predetermined lifetime servicing the machine.
Taking his life into his own hands and with a desire to beat the system the author emerges towards the end of the book as an increasingly politically, socially aware and active individual with a passion for real self guided learning. After a number of alternate career moves he also ends up following his father down the mine beginning a life of political and industrial struggle that will shape and dominate his life and are the subject for the next two volumes of his life. This is one of the best books I have read, I can't recomend it highly enough! Apr 04, Sally rated it really liked it Shelves: autobiography , geordie.
Growing up as a 'thick' Geordie lad, Dave did not get the best support from teachers what an understatement. From this crucible of injustice and ranking was born a young man sticking up for himself, and for others like him. This account demonstrates his growth into an active, militant socialist. It is funny, rude, honest and powerful. Shows how the oppression of the working class continues unabated. I am looking forward to reading the second book in this trilogy!
